Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth pledged to work on a timetable for major league expansion but said he “wouldn’t react well” to threats against baseball’s antitrust exemption.
Five senators from a Senate task force seeking baseball expansion pressed Ueberroth to commit to a schedule for adding franchises to the 26-team major leagues.
The commissioner balked at the demand, saying, “I’d like to tell you, ‘Here are the following cities and here’s what’s going to happen,’ but I can’t do that.”
