Share

Almost everyone in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island is expected to participate Sunday in a celebration of the centennial of the town’s founding and the 75th anniversary of its incorporation.

Residents of the town of more than 2,400, plus as many as 15,000 tourists, will gather on Crescent Avenue to sing “Happy Birthday.”

Photographers stationed on a hillside and in a helicopter will be on hand. The photography session culminates a series of events, including parties and educational lectures, that began in October, the 100th anniversary of the sale of the first plots of land in Avalon by town founder George Shatto, said City Clerk Shirley Davy, who coordinated the celebration. The festivities will end Sunday with a dance at Avalon’s Casino Ballroom.

Santa Catalina Island, including the one-square-mile plot of land that became Avalon, was purchased by Shatto in 1887 for $200,000.
