Local News in Brief : Donation to Drug Program
The Los Angeles Police Department’s school anti-drug program received a $100,000 donation from Rotary Club of Los Angeles.
It was the second year in a row that the service club gave that amount to the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program, under which 52 police officers are assigned full time to teach children the dangers of drug use at 347 elementary and 58 junior high schools. Since its formation in 1983, 150,000 children have gone through the 17-week course.
“We feel the drug situation is the most serious social problem that America has, and DARE is the best way to solve it,” said Jack McCarley, a Rotary spokesman.
Some funding for DARE comes from city and federal governments, but much of the $6.5 million in operating costs is met by private donations.
