Rusty Wallace Wins Michigan Stock Car Race
Rusty Wallace overcame a fuel miscalculation midway through the race and held off pole-sitter Bill Elliott Sunday to win the NASCAR Michigan 400 at Brooklyn, Mich.
Wallace’s Pontiac averaged 153.55 m.p.h. over 200 laps at Michigan International Speedway to break the race record of 153.485 set by David Pearson in 1973. Wallace finished .25 of a second ahead of Elliott.
Wallace, 31, of St. Louis, ran out of gas on the 128th lap while he had a 12-second lead over Terry Labonte. Wallace regained the lead on the 172nd lap when he passed Dale Earnhardt after a caution flag on the 166th lap.
Wallace leads the Winston Cup standings after finishing in the top three in his last six Grand National starts.
