Ballet Pacifica’s Next Concert Season to Include Five New Works

Ballet Pacifica’s 1988-89 concert series will include five new works, including one set to music by an Orange County composer that will be part of the Orange County Centennial.

Artistic director Lila Zali’s “Birthstones” to music by local composer George Russell will be seen on the opening programs, Oct. 15 and 16, at the Moulton Theatre in Laguna Beach. Zali’s new ballet will be given as part of the Orange County Centennial.

Other new works in the group’s 27th season include Molly Lynch’s “Objects” (music by Bach) and James Jones’ “Rhapsody in Blue” (Gershwin), both on Feb. 18 and 19, 1989, and Lynch’s “Eight Lines” (Steve Reich) and Jones’ “Carmen Ballet Suite” (Shchedrin-Bizet), both on April 15 and 16, 1989.

Concerts will be at 8 p.m on Saturdays and at 3:30 p.m. on Sundays at the Moulton Theatre, 606 Laguna Canyon Road. The regular concert season will be as follows:

* Oct. 15, 16: “Birthstones” (Zali/Russell); “Gift to Be Simple” (Norbert Vesak/traditional Shaker songs).

* Feb. 18, 19, 1989: “Rococo Variations” (Zali/Tchaikovsky); “Objects” (Lynch/Bach); “Rhapsody in Blue” (Jones/Gershwin).

* April 15, 16, 1989: “Eight Lines” (Lynch/Reich); “Carmen Ballet Suite” (Jones/Shchedrin-Bizet).

* June 24, 25, 1989: “Tippett Suite” (Jones/Tippett); “Firebird” (Zali-Fokine/Stravinsky).

A children’s series will be held at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays at the Festival Forum Theatre, 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach. Dates and repertory are as follows:

* Nov. 5, 6, 1988: “Pinocchio” (Calamaro/compiled score); “Festival of Nations” (Zali/compiled score).

* Jan. 21, 22, 1989: “Elves and the Shoemaker” (Kathy Kahn/compiled score); “Enchanted Toyshop” (Zali/Bayer).

* March 11, 12, 1989: “Little Red Riding Hood” (Kahn/Delibes); “Carnival of the Animals” (Kahn/Saint-Saens).

* May 20, 21, 1989: “Peter and the Wolf” (Zali/Prokofiev); “Flitters and Creepers” (Kahn/compiled score).

Additionally, Zali’s staging of “Nutcracker” will be seen this year at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 16, 17, 20, 21 and 22 and at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 17, 18, 20, 21 and 22, at the Moulton Theatre.

Tickets for the series are $25 to $35 for adults, $17 to $21 for children. Single-event tickets are $8 to $10 for adults, $5 and $6 for children. Information: (714) 494-7271.
