Cash, Wilander Knocked Out
Boris Becker dashed Pat Cash’s hopes of repeating as Wimbledon champion and Miloslav Mecir put on a brilliant display of finesse tennis to end Mats Wilander’s Grand Slam dream in quarterfinal action today.
Mecir, the ninth-seeded Czechoslovak, reached the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 victory over the world No. 2 from Sweden, who had already won the Australian and French Open this year. Becker overpowered Cash, the fourth-seeded defending champion, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semifinals. On the women’s side, Martina Navratilova ousted unseeded South African Ros Fairbank to preserve her hopes of a record ninth Wimbledon singles title.
