THE ART OF THE PITCH

Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

Apparently a song contest by a Minnesota-based ice cream company is looking for the cream of the crop--either that, or they’re milking the contest for all it’s worth. In any case, if you can moo your way through an a cappella cover version of any tune, from Lou Reed to Barry Manilow, the Kemps “Sound of Moosic Contest” wants to hear from you. The contest’s grand prize is $500 in cash and an entire year’s supply of free Kemps Ice Cream and Kemps Frozen Custard. For a tip on how to moo tunefully and yet authentically, ring up the company’s “Moos Line” at (612) 378-8326. The taped medley you’ll hear was recorded live in the Veterinary College Dairy Barn at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul campus.
