Jack Clark hit a two-run home run, and Tommy John posted his 283rd career victory as the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox, 5-3, Thursday night.

The Yankees scored three runs in the sixth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit, and Clark followed with his 16th homer in the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Yankees, who have won all five games with the White Sox this season, trail first-place Detroit by 1 1/2 games in the East.

John (6-2), the oldest player in the major leagues at 45, allowed 3 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings. Dave Righetti relieved John and picked up his 11th save.
