Dutchman Leading Tour de France After First Day

Teun Van Vliet of the Netherlands took the lead after the first two stages of the 21-day, 2,000-mile Tour de France cycling race that began Monday from the village of Pontchateau.

Steve Bauer of Canada won the 57-mile morning stage in 2 hours 16 minutes 34 seconds, and the Dutch Panasonic team won the 30-mile afternoon team time trial in 55 minutes 31 seconds.

Van Vliet, 26, of the Panasonic team, had a total time of 3:11.59. Bauer dropped to ninth as his Weimann La Suisse team finished 24 seconds behind.

The American team was 14th, and team leader Andy Hampsten was 1:45 back.

Tour organizers ordered the morning race restarted after 23 miles when striking workers from the shipyards at St. Nazaire let the cyclists pass but held up 300 support cars for more than 15 minutes.
