Local News in Brief : $4.1-Million Budget Adopted

The Rolling Hill Estates City Council has adopted a $4.1-million budget for 1988-89, $600,000 more than last year.

City Manager Ray Taylor called the budget “conservative” and said it contains no changes in the level of public services.

The increase results from an additional $50,000 being spent for the police service contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and two capital improvement projects involving streets.

The capital improvements will cost $691,000 but are being partially funded with money carried over from last fiscal year. The two projects are reconstruction of Palos Verdes Drive North from Sunnyfield Drive to Crenshaw Boulevard, and general street maintenance that was deferred last year.

Councilman Peter Weber cast the only vote against the budget, saying he wanted a larger general reserve fund than the $327,000 projected at the close of the fiscal year on June 30, 1989.

Weber said $24,000 that was saved from landscape maintenance last year and now earmarked for irrigation repairs at Howlett Park should be put into the reserve. But other council members said that when the city audit is completed in October, the budget will be reviewed to ensure that the city is not overspending.
