Tennis Roundup : Muster Defeats Oresar, Plays Duncan in Final

Eighth-seeded Tom Muster defeated Bruno Oresar, 7-5, 6-0, Saturday to advance to the final of the $415,000 U.S. Pro Tennis Championships at Brookline, Mass., against Lawson Duncan.

The 13th-seeded Duncan beat unseeded Horacio de la Pena of Argentina, 6-4, 6-2. De la Pena had upset top-ranked Mats Wilander in the quarterfinals.

Oresar, 21 and seeded 11th, struggled through a series of marathon games in the early stages of the match played in 100-degree temperatures at Longwood Cricket Club and led, 5-2, at one stage of the first set.

But Muster, the only ranking player left in the field, earned his place in today’s final by running off 11 straight games.

Wimbledon champion Steffi Graf advanced to the women’s final of the Gunze World tournament by defeating Mary Joe Fernandez, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals at Osaka, Japan.

Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria also gained today’s final by beating Etsuko Inoue of Japan, 6-3,6-2.

In the men’s semifinals, Jimmy Connors ousted Sweden’s Anders Jarryd, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6, and Tim Mayotte eliminated Eliot Teltscher, 6-0, 6-4.

Wally Masur and Brad Drewett, close friends who live five minutes apart near Sydney, Australia, advanced to today’s final of the Volvo Tennis Hall of Fame championships at Newport, R.I.

Masur, seeded No. 4, defeated Vijay Amritraj, 7-6, 7-6. Drewett, unseeded and ranked No. 172 in the world, beat Pieter Aldrich of South Africa, 7-6, 6-4.

Seventh-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland and unseeded Australian Darren Cahill gained the final of the $270,000 Swiss Open at Gstaad, Switzerland.

Cahill downed Horst Skoff of Austria, 6-1, 6-1, in only 48 minutes. Hlasek, 23, needed only an hour to beat Sergio Casal of Spain, 6-3, 6-2.
