Israeli helicopter gunships, tanks and artillery bombarded Shia Muslim guerrillas in southern Lebanon for several hours, military sources said. Israeli and U.N. sources said the shelling followed a grenade and mortar attack by guerrillas on a post of the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army militia near the village of Braachit just outside Israel’s self-declared security zone. Beirut Radio reported that Syrian-backed Shias of the Amal militia engaged an Israeli force that tried to enter Braachit.
