Tennis Roundup : Mecir Beats Tulasne in Grand Prix Event at Stuttgart

Top-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia eliminated Thierry Tulasne of France, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, in the second round of the $350,000 men’s Nabisco Grand Prix tennis tournament Tuesday at Stuttgart, West Germany.

Mecir gained the semifinals of this year’s Wimbledon tournament but was defeated by Stefan Edberg, the eventual champion.

In other second-round matches Tuesday, ninth-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina defeated Damir Keretic of West Germany, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5; 12th-seeded Martin Jaite of Argentina beat Michael Westphal of West Germany, 6-4, 6-3, and Andres Gomez of Ecuador downed Eric Winogradsky of France, 6-3, 6-2.

At Bastad, Sweden, Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden and Menno Oosting of the Netherlands were upset during the second round of the $245,000 Swedish Open.

Gustafsson, seeded second, lost to unseeded Francesco Cancellotti of Italy, 7-6, 6-1, and Oosting, seeded fourth, lost to Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia, another unseeded player, 6-1, 6-2.

Gustafsson, a clay-court specialist who reached the fourth round of the French Open this year, lost the first-set tiebreaker, 7-3, and was outplayed in the second set.

At Newport, R.I., Pam Shriver opened defense of her Virginia Slims of Newport title by beating Terry Phelps, 7-5, 6-1.

Wendy Turnbull was the only seeded player to lose, falling to Wendy White, 6-2, 6-4. Turnbull was seeded eighth.

At Brussels, defending champion Kathy Horvath, seeded seventh, was upset by Silvia La Fratta of Italy, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, in the first round of the $75,000 Belgian Open women’s tournament.

John McEnroe, Andre Agassi and Wimbledon doubles champions Ken Flach and Robert Seguro will make up the U.S. Davis Cup squad that is to face Argentina in Buenos Aires on July 22-24, officials said.

Argentina’s Davis Cup squad includes singles players Guillermo Perez-Roldan and Martin Jaite, both clay court specialists, and the doubles team of Javier Frana and Christian Miniussi, Coach Modesto (Tito) Vazquez said.

The U.S. squad defeated Peru in Lima, and Argentina upset Ecuador in Guayaquil earlier this year to advance to the American Zone final. The winner of the clay court competition at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club will advance to the 1989 World Group.
