An off-duty sheriff’s deputy captured a murder suspect who was hitchhiking on Pacific Coast Highway six hours after authorities abandoned a manhunt for him in Malibu.
Allen David Krenitsky, 23, a parolee from Virginia, was booked for investigation of murder in the slaying of Bernard Berman, who was shot to death July 5 in his Montebello home, Montebello Police Capt. Michael Kight said Wednesday.
Krenitsky, on parole for robbery, was trying to catch a ride about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy saw him and recognized him as the man being sought, Kight said.
Earlier, deputies had searched the Malibu area after a man and a woman were seen fleeing Berman’s stolen Pontiac Firebird parked along Pacific Coast Highway. A handgun was recovered but the search was called off at 2:30 a.m.
