Third Suspect Held in Anaheim Slaying Over Used Corvette

Anaheim police Friday arrested the third suspect in Sunday’s shooting death of an Anaheim woman and the wounding of her husband by three people who answered the couple’s Corvette-for-sale ad.

Norman James De Witt, 33, of Cypress was being held in Anaheim City Jail along with Robert Clarence Taylor, 26, of Seal Beach and Nanette Marie Scheid, 27. All have been booked on suspicion of murder but have not been arraigned, officials said.

The three are suspected of responding to Kazumi Hanano’s ad listing his 1984 black Corvette for sale; tying up Hanano and his wife, Ryoko; shooting them both, killing her, then stealing the car.

Questioning of the first two suspects led officers to suspect De Witt and to watch three residences closely, Lt. Marc Hedgpeth said.

De Witt was arrested at about 9:10 a.m. Thursday when he showed up at a home on Myra Avenue in Cypress, police said.

Hedgpeth said the incident began when a woman contacted the victims, test-drove the car, then returned later with two men who participated in the shooting.

“It appears that the motive for the killing was to steal the car,” Hedgpeth said.
