Local News in Brief : Agoura Hills Enacts Fire-Sprinkler Law

Share

The Agoura Hills City Council passed an ordinance making the city the first in Los Angeles County to require fire sprinkler systems in all new homes.

The requirement, which passed by a unanimous vote Wednesday, will not apply to existing homes or those with building permits granted before the law takes effect Aug. 11, city officials said.

Council members and Mayor Jack W. Koenig, sponsor of the measure, said it was a significant step toward improving fire safety in Agoura Hills.

The new law is expected to add about $3,750 to the price of 2,500-square-foot home, the mayor said.

No builders or developers spoke against the ordinance Wednesday night. A man who said he had begun building a home in Agoura Hills started to speak against the requirement but sat down after he was told the law would not affect his property.
