On Drugs and Morals

Re Bill Steigerwald’s television review (“Moralistic Tone to ABC’s ‘Drugs: Why This Plague?’ ” July 11). To even suggest that a program on drug abuse should also address itself to legalization or decriminalization is more than I can stomach.
This is 1988, Mr. Steigerwald. You can’t have had a drug-related death in your family. I have.
Let me tell you what “recreational” drugs do. They alter perception, making an already challenging life more so. They chip away at self-esteem, spirit, dreams. They corrode bodies. Some recreation.
In regard to the point of view you so sorely missed in ABC’s program--that “maybe adults should actually be allowed to take drugs in a free society”--fine; but are you volunteering for head of the road safety committee?
