Local News in Brief : Latino Vote Effort Starts
- Share via
A grass-roots, bipartisan coalition of Latino groups gathered Friday to form a statewide steering committee to educate and encourage Latinos to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
“I think we can be a swing vote, and I want to be able to say in November, ‘We made a difference in the election,’ ” said Impacto ’88 National Director Armando Navarro.
Speaking at a seminar at Cal State Los Angeles, Navarro said there are 1.5 million Latinos registered to vote in California, and 5 million nationwide.
What Impacto is trying to do is make those people politically aware so that they will be casting informed votes, Navarro said.
If the mobilization effort succeeds, Navarro predicts that by 1990 Latinos can double their representation in Congress and elect the next governor of California.
