A threatened strike by about 1,700 San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District employees has been averted--at least for two months--under a court-imposed “cooling-off” period. Gov. George Deukmejian asked the attorney general to seek a temporary restraining order to block the threatened strike against BART, which serves about 200,000 passengers each weekday in Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties. Superior Court Judge Daniel Hanlon issued the restraining order after reviewing affidavits from the state Department of Transportation and other agencies. Employees last week rejected management’s latest offer, a 3% yearly raise.
