Revealing a Secret

Share

After reading Bill Hughes’ Mature Traveler (June 26) article I must reveal one of Canada’s best-kept secrets. Recently I traveled to Banff and Jasper, Canada, and sought less expensive housing than hotels and motels offered. In Banff, for $50 (Canadian) a night for two, we rented a small apartment with bedroom, kitchen and bath.

Rooms in Jasper are easier to find. With the blessing of the government, Jasper residents are renting out spare rooms to tourists. There are singles, doubles and even larger ones for families. They are clean and comfortable. Sometimes as a bonus you will get an interesting and charming hostess.

Rooms in Banff, however, are harder to find. If you look for the name Colins in the phone book you are sure to contact either a mother or daughter, both of whom have rooms. We stayed with both. Often your hostess can recommend a place in another town, then you can call for reservations. Rates from about $30 to $65 (Canadian).
