Andre Agassi, who like his opponent had to play two matches Sunday, needed only an hour to beat Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 6-4, 6-2, in the championship of a $350,000 Grand Prix clay court tournament at Stuttgart, West Germany.
Because rain washed out play Saturday, the semifinals were played Sunday morning when the 18-year-old Agassi of Las Vegas defeated Henri Leconte of France, 7-5, 7-5, and the 28-year-old Gomez beat Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina, 6-3, 6-1.
Second-seeded Lori McNeil of Houston beat third-seeded Barbara Potter of Woodbury, Conn., 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to win the final of the $200,000 Virginia Slims of Newport, R.I., tournament.
The 2-hour 7-minute final turned on two games in the third set. Serving at 2-3 in the sixth game, Potter went ahead, 40-15. McNeil then won the next four points, breaking Potter’s serve for a 4-2 advantage. Serving in the seventh game, McNeil saved two break points and held serve.
At Bastad, Sweden, Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay survived an error-prone first set to defeat Francesco Cancellotti of Italy, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, to win the Swedish Open championship.
Second-seeded Sandra Cecchini of Italy wore down Nathalie Tauziat of France with soft, deep groundstrokes to take the final, 7-5, 6-4, in the clay court tournament at Nice, France.
