Carolyn Murray, editor of The Times’ Home magazine during a highly successful period in that publication’s history, died Saturday at Glendale Memorial Hospital. She was 62 and had been battling cancer.

Murray came to the newspaper in 1965 after 17 years on the staff of House Beautiful, where she had worked her way to executive assistant to the editor. She also was West Coast editor of that magazine and wrote of home furnishings and the environment of living from Europe, Hawaii and Mexico.

During her tenure at Home, the Sunday magazine set new marks in the use of color and articles about some of Southern California’s most glamorous residences.

She retired in 1983 after having compiled a year earlier “The Los Angeles Times California Home Book,” an anthology of residential concepts created by more than 70 architects, designers and landscape architects.

She is survived by a sister.
