Tibetan officials acknowledged for the first time that they detained more than 200 people after violent anti-Chinese demonstrations in March in Lhasa, Tibet’s capital. The acknowledgement came during talks between local officials and Australian Foreign Minister Bill Hayden, who arrived over the weekend for a two-day visit. Since September, Tibet has been rocked by demonstrations staged by Buddhist monks protesting Chinese rule and demanding independence for the Himalayan region. At least 11 people have died and hundreds have been injured in the unrest.
