An armada of small boats today ferried thousands of people off a tiny Indonesian island where a volcano erupted after a century of dormancy, sending huge pillars of fire and ash into the sky.

No casualties were reported as the 4,452-foot Mt. Kiebessy on the eastern island of Makian entered a second day of intense volcanic activity, and experts warned of worse to come. Kiebessy’s last major eruption was in 1890.
