Dexter Manley, defensive end for the Washington Redskins, is being investigated for suspected drug abuse and may face disciplinary action this season by the NFL, the Washington Post reported.

The Post, quoting unidentified sources, reported that the NFL had not taken final action yet, but the investigation stemmed from Manley’s positive result for a “minor” substance in a recent test. It is not known for what drug he tested positive.

Manley’s attorney, Bob Woolf, confirmed that the Pro Bowl player is under investigation.

Manley, 30, spent a month during spring 1987 at the Hazeldon Foundation, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Center City, Minn., where Manley said he was being treated for alcohol abuse.

NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle put his concerns with Manley in writing, and the NFL then gave the player guidelines regarding his conduct, to which Manley agreed.

Under the agreement, Manley is to submit to periodic drug testing.

Manley has refused to comment on the investigation. He is currently practicing for training camp, which begins Saturday in Carlisle, Pa..
