Local News in Brief : Council Votes to Sell Boat

After a lengthy and heated discussion, the Avalon City Council voted 3 to 2 to sell a Harbor Patrol boat to an island businessman rather than auction it to the highest bidder.
Marine surveyor William Steel had determined the boat’s value at $32,000 but said it would cost $75,000 to replace the vessel.
The council decided to sell the vessel for $32,000 to Doug Bombard of Two Harbors, who had sold it to the city for $27,000 in 1981. Council members who favored the sale to Bombard said the city had promised him the right of first refusal if it ever decided to sell the boat.
A move by council members Irene Strobel and John Phillips to sell the boat at public auction was defeated, 3 to 2.
Proceeds from the sale will be used to offset the cost of a new fire and rescue boat.
