Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Planners to Consider Times’ Heliport Request

Share

The Costa Mesa Planning Commission on Monday will consider a request by the Los Angeles Times to build a heliport next to its office at 1375 Sunflower Ave. in Costa Mesa.

The hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The heliport is designed to handle about two daily flights from the Times building to John Wayne Airport and the Times’ Los Angeles office. The flights would be limited to daylight hours on workdays, except during emergencies.

A study conducted by the commission earlier this year found that the flights will increase noise levels in surrounding areas, but not enough to warrant a full-fledged environmental impact report.

The study recommended that the heliport be approved and concluded, “As a result of high existing noise levels and low number of average daily flights projected, no inordinate noise impacts would occur from heliport operations.”

If the project is endorsed by the Planning Commission, the Costa Mesa City Council will consider the proposal.
