A Malibu beachfront home owned by producer-director Steven Spielberg was extensively damaged Sunday by fire and a neighboring house was destroyed, officials reported.

Los Angeles County fire officials said both homes in the 31300 block of Broad Beach Road, which were unoccupied at the time, went up in flames about 6:30 p.m. It took 10 engine companies about 40 minutes to extinguish the blazes.

Before firefighters arrived on the scene, 13-year-old Daniel Reisbord said, neighbors tried to help by spraying the two homes with hoses.
