Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd said he regrets the absence of Iranians at the just-concluded annual pilgrimage to Mecca and expressed hope of an amicable settlement of the rift between his country and Iran. He said Iranian pilgrims are still welcome to “the land of Islam” and blamed Tehran for decisions that led to their absence this year. Saudi figures showed that 1,379,556 Muslims--including 762,755 from abroad--gathered this year for the pilgrimage, a decline of 27% from 1987.
