A retired aerospace worker whose wife surprised a burglar in the garage of their Venice home chased the man a half-mile and then shot and killed him in an alley, police said Tuesday.
The 64-year-old man was in his house, where he has lived for 32 years, in the 1100 block of Indiana Avenue at 1:40 p.m. Monday when his wife began screaming that there was a burglar in their garage, Lt. Ross Moen said. The names of the couple were withheld.
The man grabbed a gun and began chasing the suspected burglar, later identified as Clarence Jennings, 47, who ran off down the street, Moen said. After a half-mile, Jennings darted into an alley and the man continued the chase, Moen said. When Jennings turned to approach the man, the man shot and killed him, Moen said.
Police did not plan to seek charges against the homeowner, a former McDonnell-Douglas Aeronautics Corp. worker, Moen said.
