CAMPAIGN ’88 : Dual Campaign Protest

Republicans in Washington on Wednesday filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the Federal Election Commission from releasing $46 million in public funds to the Democratic presidential nominee, Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, and his running mate, Texas Sen. Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr.

The Republicans are objecting to the Democratic ticket using public funds at the same time Bentsen is using private donations and, simultaneously, running for reelection to the Senate. Use of private contributions is not permitted in presidential general election campaigns.

In its complaint, the GOP alleges that Bentsen used private funds for the general election campaign, and cited a telegram sent by his Senate reelection committee asking for support for the Dukakis-Bentsen ticket.
