U.S. Ambassador to Australia William Lane presented a check for $4.4 million to Australian and New Zealand veterans of the Vietnam War who suffered from the effects of Agent Orange, saying the settlement was due to the “American constitutional democratic process.” The pay-out is a share of the $13-million settlement handed down recently by the U.S. Supreme Court against manufacturers of the defoliant. Lane presented the check to representatives of the estimated 40,000 Australian and New Zealand veterans who are expected to apply for benefits from the settlement.
