A 65-year-old man who was struck by a train and killed Monday in Burbank may have been deaf and unable to hear the train coming, police said.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was struck by a 13-car Amtrak train on the Victory Place railroad crossing near Lake Street, Sgt. Don Goldberg said.

The man had been walking south on the tracks when he was hit by the northbound train about noon, Goldberg said. He said the train’s engineer blew the train’s horn, but the victim gave no indication that he heard it and did not try to move to safety.

“It looks like he wasn’t looking up and he didn’t hear it coming,” Goldberg said. “We don’t think it was a suicide.”

Police said the victim was tentatively identified as a local man who was known to be deaf and was often seen in the area, but his name was not released because his family had not been notified.
