Pro Football Roundup : Ex-Titan Tight End Thornton Fighting for a Job With Bears

Share

The Chicago Bears worked out in steamy 100-degree temperatures Monday in Platteville, Wis., but Jim Thornton, a rookie from Cal State Fullerton trying to impress his coaches at the tight end spot, wasn’t complaining.

“The heat is only a problem to people who let it be a problem,” said Thornton, who is challenging Cap Boso and Emery Moorehead.

The Bears will meet the Miami Dolphins Saturday at Soldier Field in their first exhibition game of the season. Thornton had five receptions in a scrimmage Saturday.

“I need to work a little on technique in blocking a bigger man and in fine-tuning my pass routes and reading the coverages,” he said. “Then, I think I’ll be OK.”

The Dallas Cowboys released 13 rookie free agents, including former Cal State Fullerton kicker Len Strandley, to cut their roster to 108 Monday.

Strandley made 17 of 29 field goals in two years (1986-’87) with the Titans after transfering from the University of Washington.
