Boomer Beach in La Jolla was ordered closed for 24 hours Tuesday after a sewage line ruptured in the 1100 block of Coast Boulevard and 120 gallons of sewage spilled across a sidewalk and onto the sand, said Lyn Wallis, a spokesman for the San Diego County Department of Health Services.

The flow lasted from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and prompted the posting of warning signs along a 200-foot stretch of the beach. It was unclear what caused the line to rupture, Wallis said.

The flow did not enter the ocean and has been cleaned up by the city’s Water Utilities Department, said department spokeswoman Yvonne Rehg.
