Child-Care Issue in Presidential Politics

Now that child-care has become a lively political issue would be a good time to introduce a workable program instead of the phony one candidate Vice President George Bush has proposed (Part I, July 25). Establish a child-care center in every elementary school in the country. It’s a natural. The buildings are already there. Most elementary schools have facilities for taking care of young children or they can easily be added. The schools are easy to reach. Babies would grow into kindergarten children without having to endure the traumatic transition from home to school. All parents of young children would benefit, without regard to level of taxable income.

The program could be financed with federal funds diverted from the disastrous B-1 and “Star Wars” programs.

It simply means starting elementary school at age 6 months instead of 5 years. What are we waiting for?
