Charity Begins . . .

KLSX--which execs say have committed more than $30,000 in promotions for Amnesty International’s benefit concert Sept. 21--has been billing itself as L.A.’s “official” Amnesty concert station. (The entire tour, which features Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Peter Gabriel, is sponsored by the Reebok Foundation.) So KLSX’s competition , KLOS-FM, is refusing to run ads for the human rights event, which is still short of sell-out.

“Why should we run ads for someone else’s show?” said KLOS g.m. Bill Sommers. “If they’re the official station, let them sell it out. All I’m doing is trying to protect KLOS’ image--we’ve never been an ‘official’ station for any charity event. So I’m certainly not going to promote a rival station’s event.”

Retorted Julie Finkel, KLSX promo director: “We don’t think the concert should suffer because of some mini-hip gladiators from another station which is jealous of our involvement with the show.”

Sources at Avalon Attractions, the show’s local promoter, said that both Reebok and Avalon have been pressuring KLSX to drop the official designation.

“They have let us know our lives would be simpler if we dropped the word official ,” Finkel conceded. “But before we do that we want to be assured that we continue to have the same access to the show as before.”
