Edberg Is Upset by Woodforde as Lendl Wins in Toronto

Australian Mark Woodforde, ranked No. 50, pulled off the first major upset of the Player’s International tennis tournament Wednesday when he defeated Wimbledon champion Stefan Edberg of Sweden, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2.

The loss dashed Edberg’s hopes of overtaking Ivan Lendl for the No. 1 ranking this week. Edberg, 22, moved within striking distance with his Wimbledon title last month.

“I had no energy today, it was really hot,” said Edberg, who has played only one Davis Cup match since winning Wimbledon and who was coming off a vacation.

Lendl had little trouble while beating Todd Witsken, 6-2, 6-2, in his second-round match on the artificial courts of the National Tennis Centre at York University.

Other results included John McEnroe’s 6-3, 7-5 victory over Kelly Evernden of Australia and Australian Pat Cash’s 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over Yaya Doumbia of Senegal.
