Local News in Brief : Irvine : Road Is Blocked Off for Crash Re-Enactment

Caltrans blocked off the transition road between the northbound San Diego and southbound Newport-Costa Mesa freeways for two hours Thursday night while experts re-enacted an accident that is the focus of a lawsuit, officials said Friday.

Officials refused to give details of the accident or the lawsuit, but they said the trial is scheduled for October. The state Department of Transportation is involved because the accident, between a car and a motorcycle, occurred on a highway owned and controlled by the state, officials said.

Carol Morgan, an attorney in the legal division of Caltrans, said the department sometimes re-enacts accidents when there is possible state liability.

“There were several expert witnesses present to reenact . . . the conditions that were present on the night of the actual accident,” Morgan said. “That’s why it was done at night, at this time of year.”

Morgan said traffic was detoured around the area during the re-enactment.
