***NEW EDITION. “Heart Break.” MCA. The five bubble-gum soul singers from Boston, whose bouncy hits “Candy Girl,” “Mr. Telephone Man” and “Cool It Now” turned the Jackson 5 sing-alikes into teen-age pop stars, have grown up. With the assistance of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and the debut of new member Johnny Gill, New Edition has a funkier, more mature and sexier new sound. The first single, “If It Isn’t Love,” already a crossover hit, best demonstrates New Edition’s older soul-pop sound, but Gill’s sophisticated vocals prove to be a curse in disguise. The innocent quality that New Edition was famous for is gone, overwhelmed by Gill’s dominating baritone voice in the mid-tempo grooves of “I’m Coming Home” and “Boys to Men.” Gill’s background vocals, however, are a nice touch on the romantic ballad “Can You Stand the Rain.”
