Two people were killed and another was injured Sunday night when a car hit the bus bench they were sitting on, police said.

Identities of the dead, described only as an elderly woman and a young man, were not immediately known. A third unidentified person sustained minor injuries.

Police Sgt. Jack Sommers said the car was heading west on Pico Boulevard just west of downtown, when it struck the bench at Magnolia Avenue.

“At this point, it seems to be a case of excessive speed,” Sommers said. “He (the driver) came down here too fast and hit the bus bench.”

One witness, Jose Cachu, who lives nearby, said the driver “got out (of the car) and started running. People right there caught him in the middle of the block” before police arrived.

Sommers said the driver, whose name was not released, was being questioned and seemed “confused about what happened.”

The sergeant added that it did not appear that drugs or alcohol figured in the accident.
