Hart All-Stars Put on Hold in Colt Series, 2-0

Share

Jason Edwards lost a baseball game.

To understand the magnitude of that statement, consider that Edwards, a right-handed pitcher, was 11-0 at Hart High last season and 4-0 for Hart’s Colt all-star team this summer.

But after Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to Caguas, Puerto Rico, Edwards has fallen from the ranks of the undefeated and Hart’s season is down to one game. Hart and Caguas play again at 5:30 tonight to decide the Colt World Series championship.

Caguas scored single runs in the first and sixth innings and pitcher Carlos Lopez limited Hart to four hits. Caguas, which lost earlier in the tournament, advanced through the losers’ bracket and must defeat Hart again to win the title.

Edwards, who struck out three and walked four, fired a two-hitter, but Hart managed only singles by Lance Migita, Robbie Davis, Chris Vasquez and Jay Sanford.

Hart threatened in the top of the sixth when it had runners on second and third with one out. Matt Tull hit a long sacrifice fly to center field that appeared to score Anthony Cervantez from third to tie the score, 1-1.

Caguas, however, appealed at third and Cervantez was called out for leaving the base too early. The double play ended the inning.

Should Hart win tonight, it would mark the third consecutive World Series title for the nucleus of the team. The group, which includes Edwards, won the Pony League World Series in 1986 and helped the Sherman Oaks-Van Nuys team win the Babe Ruth title in 1987.
