Top Women Spikers Play in Shaw Open
The 23rd annual Coppertone John Shaw Open Women’s Professional Beach Volleyball Tournament will be played Saturday and Sunday at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
The open, possibly the oldest continuous tournament in women’s volleyball--it’s named for a former Manhattan Beach director of recreation--will feature most of this year’s top teams, including tour leaders Jackie Silva and Linda Chisholm and the duo that has been their top competition this summer, Kathy Gregory and Janice Opalinski. Silva and Chisholm have lost only one tournament this summer.
The tourney offers $10,000 prize money, the largest purse in the history of the open. Play begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday, with 32 teams in a double-elimination format. The finals are scheduled at about 3 p.m. Sunday.
