The Defense Department has approved spending $11.1 million to clean up thousands of pieces of military ordnance left in Tierrasanta when the area was used as a World War II artillery range, Rep. Bill Lowery (R-San Diego) said Friday.
Lowery said the cleanup, which will begin in the fall, is “the beginning of the end of the bomb scares in Tierrasanta.”
The cleanup will be done in phases over three years and will include controlled burning of brush, electronic sweeps for detection of shells and brush trimming.
Lowery began pushing for the appropriation after two 8-year-old boys died in 1983 when a shell they found in a canyon exploded as they played with it.
