Florida State, which last season narrowly missed its first national championship, Saturday was named the No. 1 college football team in the country in preseason polls released by the Associated Press and United Press International.

“It’s a dangerous position but one we’re flattered to be in,” Coach Bobby Bowden said.

The AP has Nebraska second, then Oklahoma, Clemson, UCLA and USC.

UPI has Oklahoma No. 2, then Nebraska, Clemson, Miami, Texas A&M;, Auburn, USC and UCLA.

Until this year, no Florida school had entered the season top-ranked.

Bowden, who will open his 12th season with Florida State on Sept. 3 at Miami, still regards the Hurricanes as the team to beat.

“To me, Miami is No. 1. They ended up No. 1 last year and nobody’s beaten them yet,” he said.

Only seven college teams ranked first in the AP’s preseason poll since 1950 have finished at the top.
