Mature travelers can enjoy the romance of the rails with the introduction of Senior Rail Tours, designed for travelers over age 50. The service uses Amtrak and, where airline service is required, United Airlines. While most of the tours originate in Chicago, arrangements are made by the tour operator or your travel agent so that passengers may join the tours along the way.

One tour, the Romantic South, has two November departures, 11 days, in Natchez, Miss., Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans, with a full schedule of visits to landmarks, gardens, cathedrals, a Mississippi River cruise, museums, plantations and city tours. Ample free time is allotted for relaxation and personal activities.

The tour includes rail and bus transportation, hotels, most dinners and breakfasts, and tour escorts. The price from Chicago is $1,090 per person, double occupancy. Round-trip rail fare from Los Angeles to Chicago is an additional $132 per person. Arrangements can also be made to travel one or both ways by air.

New England Tour

A fall foliage tour covers the Atlantic Northeast and Canada for 12 days, with two departure dates in September. Stops in Canada include Quebec, Montreal, Toronto and Niagara Falls, and, in the United States, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Green Mountains in Vermont, and Boston.

The tour includes city sightseeing excursions, motor-coach trips through the mountains, visits to museums, some meals and ample free time. The per-person cost from Chicago is $1,324, plus the $132 round-trip add-on for Amtrak from Los Angeles. As with the Romantic South, travel to and from Chicago can be by rail or air, or a combination of both.

Senior Rail Tours has packaged two new tours--one to Florida and one to Texas--for early 1989, and will repeat their successful program of tours throughout the year.

Most travel agents have information on Senior Rail Tours. You can obtain free brochures by writing to OmniTours, Dept. MT, 1 Northfield Plaza, Northfield, Ill. 60093. Or call toll-free (800) 962-0060.
