75 Homeless as Roof Collapses
About 75 people were left homeless today when the roof of an apartment building that was being reinforced to meet earthquake standards collapsed in the Silver Lake district.
Three fire companies were sent to the Westmoreland Avenue apartment building at 10:27 a.m., said Jim Wells, Fire Department spokesman. There were no reports of injuries in the incident and the Red Cross was asked to find temporary shelter for the victims. Lightning strikes caused power blackouts to more than 80,000 homes and businesses in Los Angeles and Orange counties at mid-morning. Southern California Edison spokesman Gene Carter said most of the outages were brief.
