Local News in Brief : San Clemente : Funds Given to Help Elderly Share Homes
The state Department of Housing and Community Development has awarded $38,000 to a nonprofit San Clemente organization to help the elderly take part in home sharing.
The grant, awarded to the San Clemente Seniors, is earmarked for staffing and office operations to help an estimated 320 seniors set up joint housekeeping. The San Clemente group serves southern and coastal Orange County. A similar grant has been approved for the city of Santa Ana.
Assemblyman Gil Ferguson (R-Newport Beach) said the home-sharing program assists seniors economically and socially.
“Home sharing is a great way for many of the elderly on a fixed income to not only reduce their cost of living but also to combat loneliness and the isolation of living alone,” said Ferguson, vice-chairman of the Assembly’s Housing and Community Development Committee.
