Controversy Over Quayle’s Nomination
As a veteran of World War II, Korea and a member of the California National Guard during the Vietnam conflict, I would like to make a few facts known. The Guard actively recruited potential draftees. No one needed any influence to join. Many mothers and fathers called or visited Guard armories to inquire about Guard service during this period. Guard units did serve in Vietnam as they did in Korea and during World War II. President Harry S. Truman served overseas during World War I as a National Guardsman. National Guardsmen have been serving the country since 1792.

The Times received 429 letters on Quayle’s nomination; 294 were critical of his nomination, 112 supported him, and 23 took no stand.
