Woman, Child in Car Slain by Gunfire

A woman and a child were found shot to death Sunday inside a car on a Lake View Terrace street, and a second child was injured, apparently by glass that was broken when a gunman fired into the vehicle, police said.

Witnesses told police that a man with a rifle came out of a house in the 11400 block of Wheeler Avenue and approached a Toyota Camry with the woman and two children inside.

The gunman shot out a window in the car, and reached inside to open a door, police said. He drove about a mile to the 11300 block of Osborne Street where he abandoned the car. Investigators found the vehicle and the victims about 5 p.m.

The woman appeared to be in her mid-20s, police said, adding that the dead child was 2 or 3. The injured child is approximately 18 months old and is in satisfactory condition at Pacifica Hospital in Sun Valley. Police did not identify any of the victims.
